Upcoming International Events on Campus

Sparsh is an annual, cultural event organized by the Student Council of India at the University of Maryland. This day-long event offers a number of cultural events, various fun-filled games, karaoke, a dance floor, and delicious Indian food! Sparsh is happening THIS Sunday, April 8, in the Colony Ballroom at the Union.

The next showing in the International Film Series is The Cuckoo (Kukushka in Russian) at 7pm on Tuesday, April 10, at Hoff Theater in the Union. The film takes place in September 1944 during the Second World War in Lapland, north of the Arctic Circle. Anni, a young Saami war widow, stumbles upon two soldiers – a Finnish sniper and a Russian officer. The three find themselves stranded together at the edge of the world without a common language. Languages include Russian, Finnish, Saami, and German; subtitled in English. Professor Elizabeth Papazian of the School of Languages, Literature, and Culture will be hosting. The Cuckoo is FREE and open to all!

A new photography exhibit has just opened in the Art-Sociology building called Persian Visions: Contemporary Photography from Iran. It is the first major exhibition of contemporary Iranian photography in the U.S., and includes more than sixty works of photography and video installations by twenty of Iran’s most celebrated photographers. The exhibition is on view now through April 29.

Maryland Day

Maryland Day will be held on April 28, 2007, from 10-4pm, rain or shine! Traveling Terps has been asked to contribute to this year’s internationally- themed program and we’ll be located at the Global Village at Hornbake Plaza with other groups who will be cooking international foods and celebrating different cultures through dance.

Traveling Terps will have some games for everyone — children, students, and parents. We’re especially looking forward to our photo contest featuring pictures from around the world! Anyone is welcome to submit photos to three categories and the top three of each category will be judged by visitors to Maryland Day. Last spring’s photo contest was a huge success and we’re looking for even more participation! More details will follow soon.

Welcome!

Traveling Terps has kicked off the Spring 2007 semester! We have a lot of exciting opportunities coming up. Maryland Day will be held on April 28, 2007. This year’s theme is international, so Traveling Terps have been asked to contribute some activities, including a photo contest and games.

We’re also starting our International Buddy System this year, hooking up American students with students from other countries who are studying in College Park. We’ll be holding an event soon as a kick-off and introduction for all the buddies! If you’re interested in this experience, contact us at travelingterps [at] gmail.com.
