Teach English in Taiwan

If you’re a graduating Traveling Terp, you might be interested in this!  Go2TeachEnglish is looking for 15 or so recent college graduates to teach English in Taiwan starting this summer.  The biggest requirements are a bachelor’s degree (English, History, or Education preferred), native English language skills, openmindedness, and an appreciation for children; prior teaching experience is helpful but not required.  In addition to teaching children, all teachers can receive training and certification from TAEFEE, the oldest and largest teaching association in Taiwan.   For more information on the program and application process, visit their site.

Free International Film

Take a break from your final assignments and studying and come enjoy a free international flick!  As part of the International Film Series, the Hoff will be showing Italian for Beginners on Tuesday, May 8 at 7pm.  The movie is in Danish and Italian with English subtitles.  Italian for Beginners is a black comedy about six miserable young people who meet in an Italian language class and find friendship, romance, and solace in each other.  Professor Rose-Marie Oster from the School of Languages, Literature, and Cultures will be hosting the event.

Photo Contest Winners!

We’d like to thank everyone for participating in our photo contest — photographers, voters, and volunteers. We had well over 700 people vote in the contest at Maryland Day. The winners are:

Architecture: Suehyun Cho for World Under the Roof in Korea
Landscape: Brendan Lowe for Deadvlei in Namibia
Culture/People: Anson Knausenberger for Pilgrimage on Mount Moses in Egypt
Off-the-Beaten-Path: Anne Powell for Art versus Nature in Spain

We’d like to congratulate the four winners on some fabulous photos — the winners received an 8″x10″ copy of their photo framed as well as a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide travel book. (For the two who could not attend Maryland Day, the Study Abroad Office has your prizes!)

We’re working on getting these pictures up here, but in the mean time, please find the pictures at the Study Abroad Office’s site.

Look for information in September regarding our Fall 2007 photo contest!

Photo Contest Update — Finalists Picked!

Thanks to everyone who submitted pictures for this year’s Traveling Terps photo contest.  We got some amazing submissions, but unfortunately that means not all the excellent pictures could be chosen for the Top 3 in each category.  Please visit the Study Abroad Office’s site to see this year’s Top 3 and don’t forget to come over to Hornbake Plaza THIS Saturday to vote for the winners at the Traveling Terps’ booth at Maryland Day!

Also, mark your calendars! Our last meeting will be this Tuesday, May 1 — more details will follow, but we will be showing all your submissions to the photo contest as well as serving some munchies and refreshments!

Going International

For undergraduate students from all disciplines, from 1-5pm on Thursday, April 26, the CTE-Lilly Fellows are coordinating “Going International: A Day of Answers.” The afternoon’s four sessions will address student concerns about identifying international experiences while studying at Maryland.  Going International will be held in McKeldin’s Special Events Room (6137). The schedule follows:

  • 1pm: Resource fair including participants from programs across campus, including the Study Abroad Office, Traveling Terps, National Scholarships Office, the University Career Center, and representatives from the colleges, among others.
  • 2pm: Bruce La Brack, an expert on intercultural exchange from the University of the Pacific, will host a discussion.
  • 3pm: Mr. La Brack will moderate a panel of undergraduates discussing their international experiences (including some Traveling Terps!).
  • 4pm: An expert panel will address the professional value of international learning.

We hope to see you there!

Potluck Dinner THIS Sunday!

Date: Sunday, April 15
Time: 5:30pm – 8:30pm
Location: Dorchester Hall Basement

Come and enjoy our potluck dinner featuring international cuisine. We will watch movies, socialize, play games, and of course EAT!  This is an open event so feel free to bring your friends and roommates.  All Traveling Terps and other international-loving students are welcome!

In order to partake in this event, each attendee is asked to bring a food item. Traveling Terps understands that you might not be the next Top Chef or that you might not even have access to a kitchen. Some suggestions would be to stop by the Diner or one of the many shops on or off campus and pick up some “international” food. Some examples might be chips and salsa, hummus and pita, etc.  Be creative!

Please RSVP to travelingterps@gmail.com by this Friday, April 13, to tell us you’re attending and what you’re bringing!

Volunteer for Maryland Day!

It’s just a few weeks until Maryland Day on April 28, and we’re looking for volunteers! We know you are excited about coming to enjoy the campus on a Saturday, so now is your chance to pick your first choice shift for working at the Global Village in Hornbake Plaza with Traveling Terps/Study Abroad Office. There are five different 2.5 hour shifts, so you will still have time to catch the cooking demonstrations and try to win a $100 gift certificate in the Ikea contest. In addition, you will get free food, a t-shirt and meet lots of great people.

Available time slots are: 9-11:30am, 10-12:30pm, 11:30-2pm, 12:30-3pm, and 1:30-4pm.

Please choose one of the time slots and RSVP as soon as possible by emailing us at travelingterps@gmail.com.
