Meet Us

To meet some of the Terps who have traveled around the world, click on the links below. See where we’ve studied, visited, or what we’re doing at the University of Maryland. If you’re going abroad to one of the places we’ve visited or are interested in knowing more, feel free to email any of us with questions, that’s why we’re here!

Asher Kohn is a junior history major with minors in terrorism studies and religious studies. He immediately joined Traveling Terps after spending the Summer of 2007 cruising around Central Asia and the Caucasus in a truck and spending the Fall 2007 semester in Istanbul, Turkey. He is currently the President of Traveling Terps. He misses 4-hour dinners so good they hurt, as well as a week spent blazing through Anatolia in a rented Fiat. He is open to any and all of your questions, and can be reached through Facebook and at AJKohn [at] umd.edu.

Vanessa Arthur is in her third year and doubling in Chinese and Government & Politics. She’s one of the founding members of Traveling Terps, and rightfully so, after spending Spring 2006 studying in Madrid, Spain, and that summer in Thailand. She admires the Spanish approach to life, taking time to enjoy life, and she wishes everywhere were as beautiful as Thailand. Vanessa is spending the current semester in Beijing and you can read all about her adventures! Vanessa can be reached at varthur [at] umd.edu.

Michelle Ayazi is a graduate student in International Education Policy and is advisor of Traveling Terps. She spent Fall 2001 on Semester at Sea and lived in Hungary while studying at the Budapest Business School in Fall 2002. After graduation, she taught English in Lodz, Poland. She’s backpacked in Eastern Europe several times and Costa Rica. Get in touch with Michelle at mayazi [at] umd.edu.

Emily Fetter is a junior Government & Politics major. She’s Secretary of Traveling Terps and very active in Mock Trial (we like getting her to say “Objection!”). Emily lived in Trastavere, a neighborhood in Rome, while she studied at the American University in Rome in 2006. She loves the windy streets, cute shops, delicious restaurants and the amazing gelato that is characteristic of Italy. After studying, she backpacked through Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. Her email address is efetter [at] umd.edu.

Chrissy Kidd is the treasurer of Traveling Terps. Majoring in English and History, she is looking forward to graduating this May. She studied at Charles University in Prague during Spring 2006 and backpacked around Europe for a month afterwards; she also spent a month studying in London on a UM winterterm program in 2005. She suggests going to Prague for amazing architecture, the best beer, living history, and cheap prices (until Prague gets the Euro in a couple years!). Chrissy can be reached at ckidd [at] umd.edu.

Kate Lassen is a junior majoring in junior Government & Politics and Spanish. Kate is the President and co-founder of Traveling Terps. She spent the fall of 2005 studying at James Cook University in Cairns, Australia. She loves the slower pace of life in Australia, and especially how close Cairns is to the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest! Pretty much the only thing she didn’t like was the long flights between Cairns and the States. Kate has also traveled to Mexico and Scandinavia several times. She can be reached at klassen [at] umd.edu.

Brendan Lowe is a junior doubling in Government & Politics and journalism. He’s currently spending the semester in Cape Town, South Africa. He thinks South Africa is “spectacular. Not everything is western and modern and hunky-dory, and that’s what makes is spectacular. It’s Africa. When you go out … you fit 17 people into an eight-person minibus.” Read more about Brendan in his blog called Cape Town Adventures. He can also be reached at brenlowe [at] gmail.com.

ivan.JPGIvan Szpakowski is a junior Chinese and history double major. He spent Fall 2006 at Beijing Foreign Studies University in Beijing, China, and is getting reacclimated to the States this semester. His favorite things about China were the wide variety of authentic food, the range of natural beauty and the amazing historical sites. His favorite Chinese phrases are 加油 (“jia you”) meaning go team or general encouragement, and 好球 (“hao qiu”) meaning bravo, nice play. Ivan can be reached at iszpakowski [at] gmail.com.

Rachel von Glahn is the Vice President and co-founder of Traveling Terps. She’s a junior International Business major. She spent Fall 2005 at the University of Adelaide in Australia and in January 2007 she traveled to South Africa and Lesotho on a UM winterterm program. Her favorite Aussie movie is The Castle and her favorite excursion was scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef. Get in touch with Rachel at rvnglhn [at] umd.edu.
