Hey everyone,

Sorry that it has been so long since the last e-mail. We have all been very busy, and that includes me, but I just got word of a very, very, good movie that will be shown on campus on Wednesday at 7:00 PM. It is called “Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul” and it is about the music scene of Istanbul. Its IMDB page is here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0459242/

For those of you that do not know, I was in Istanbul last Fall (2007). It is a city of about 20 million people from pretty much all over the world, so the music scene is just an awesome mix of styles. Not just traditional “Middle Eastern” music, but hip hop, blues, soul, rock…really everything.

Before the movie a Turkish student will talk for a bit. And the movie is only 90 minutes long, so you will have plenty of time to enjoy your Wednesday night afterwards.

I just realized now that I do not have confirmation on where it is, but I believe it will be shown in either Hoff or Dorchester Hall. I will send out another post tomorrow when I discover where it is (unless you know where it is and want to let me know).

But seriously, I will give more details tomorrow, but if you have the time to go, you really ought to check it out. Hopefully I will see you there.

UPDATE:

the movie will be playing in the basement of Dorchester Hall at 7pm on Wednesday. Dorchester Hall is where the International Coffee Hours are, for those of you that go. It is just north of McKeldin Library, very close to the mall.

If you still do not believe me in how great this movie is, here is the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7Emtncpypw

Hope to see you all there.

International Student Coffee Hour tomorrow (Wednesday) from 3:00-4:30

Hey y’all,

So I just got wind today that there’s an international student coffee hour (and a half) tomorrow in Dorchester Hall. If you’ve never been to one before, it’s a good time. Free food, free coffee, and just chatting with some good folks. I will definitely be there to talk up the club when it begins, but I will have to leave at 3:30. If any of you all want to come, you should. There’s obviously no commitment, but as I said, its free food and a good time.

If you don’t know where Dorchester is, check out the map: http://www.parking.umd.edu/themap/

If you have any other questions, let me know.

International Student Happy Hour: This Friday 9/26

Hey everyone, I hope you’re ready to send off September well.

This Friday, we’ll be hosting a happy hour at Cornerstone from 5:30-7:30. You must be 18 to show up and 21 to drink. We should have a good collection of internationalstudents and American students, and I am hoping that we can all get to meet each other, have a good time, and plan out what we want to do for the rest of the semester.

For those that don’t know where Cornerstone is, it is on the corner of Route 1 and Knox Avenue opposite Smoothie King and the strip mall parking lot.

So please come. It will be a good time and a lot of fun, and we could possibly all go from there to watch the Maryland-Wake Forest soccer match that evening; a battle of top-5 teams.

If you have any questions, as always, please contact us at travelingterps [at] gmail.com. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you on Friday.

Hello First Look Fair Participants

Hey everone. You probably found this page through our flyers at our table and on the Study Abroad Office’s table at the First Look Fair. If so, congrats. You made it this far, so you’re definitely interested in travel, interesting people, and interesting people who’ve traveled.

I wrote the following description of the group for an e-mail closing our old listserv, but I feel that it still holds. Basically, we’re a group of students who had a good time seeing the world and want other people to get the same connections and learn the same lessons and feel the same adventures we did. So if the following sounds like it fits you, or you’re just interested, give us an email at travelingterps [at] gmail.com
and let us know your name, your year, and your major and we will be in touch soon…our second activity is next Friday! Oh and right…the quote…

This group was founded on the idea that people who have been to cool places and done cool things like to talk about those places and things. We still do. So the primary goal of this group is mainly social. We like to hear stories and hear about things we can do on summer break or something like that. I get to talk about climbing mountains on the Georgian-Russian border, you get to talk about the best crepes in some arondissement in Paris, some other guy is talking about hunting for kangaroo in the Australian outback…we all get to meet new people and have a good time. But we’re also adding a couple of goals. We’d like to help incoming students or people who want to do cool stuff abroad find the opportunities to do so. And we want for us undergraduates who want to do work internationally when we graduate to hear about options to do so. So we’re adding an outreach component and trying to rope in speakers to talk to us about work and volunteer in the more cool/fascinating reaches of the world. We also have a whole lot of international students here, and we’d like to be friendly faces for all of them who come and visit us. We’d just like to give them the opportunity to hang out with some cool Americans and experience the United States that we’d like to experience if we were study abroad here. We figure that the best people to meet international students would be those who know how intimidating it can be to be studying in a different country, so the Traveling Terps have the opportunity to really do something important here.

All the best,

TT

FIRST Traveling Terps Event: Watch Terps Soccer!

Hey y’all. We have our first event and we hope you can show up for it.

The University of Maryland’s Men’s Soccer Team is playing Hartford University at 8pm on Friday, September 5.

The game is at 8:00, but we’ll be outside at 7:30 meeting people so that we can get seats. Remember, it is FREE entry with a University of Maryland ID. Please show up at 7:30 and look for me (I’ll update this with what I’m wearing later on), so that we can meet up, get rowdy, and enjoy the beautiful – and international – game.

As always, drop a line if you have any questions. We’re excited to start up this semester, so let’s hope its a good one.

As always,

AJK

P.S. Link to the soccer schedule is here. From there, you can click around to all the other sports to see what their schedules are. Let me know what you’re interested in watching!

New Google Calendar (and New Events)!

Hey y’all,

Hope you’re having a good summer so far. There are a couple of events coming your way in September that we’d like you to know about and a new way to access them.

First of all, I hope that you check out our new Google Calendar, linked to our e-mail address over at travelingterps [at] gmail.com. We are live and we have some stuff up there now, and only more things are going to come up in the future (meetings, lecturers, International Coffee Hour, and so on and so forth). So go over to calendar.google.com and check it out.

So what’s on this calendar, you may wonder? Well, there’s a couple of things on for Setpember, to start.

On September 2, the Study Abroad Office will be hosting a Returnee Reception and Dinner in the Banneker Room of Stamp Student Union. There, exchange students coming in will be meeting with students who studied abroad for Spring or Summer 2008. They’ll get to introduce (or re-introduce) each other, listen to an awesome speaker, and find out how they can go abroad again, as a student or as a professional. Oh yeah, and it’ll be catered by Subway for FREE so show up to chow down. Just please RSVP first.

Also, on Sepember 9, the Study Abroad Fair will be happening from 10-4 in the Grand Ballroom of Stamp Student Union. Be sure to check it out to see how you can Study Abroad; again or for the first time. If you’ve already studied abroad, loved it, and would like to volunteer, please give the Study Abroad Office a holler.

That’s it for now. As always, please keep in touch and nag us with any questions.

Have a good summer!

Have a Great Summer

Traveling Terps would like to apologize for the lack of activity over the spring 2008 semester. We have all been extraordinarily busy and, unfortunately, we were not able to keep up with this website as we would have hoped.

However, we are back and live and ready to serve the UMd community! So please feel free to flip around the site and let us know what you think. E-mails are always welcome to travelingterps [at] gmail.com

So please keep in touch and feel free to critique. We hope you have an incredible summer and come back with some stories for us to hear in the fall.

Fall Photo Contest!

After the success of the past two years, the Traveling Terps photo contest is back, and this time photos not only from studying abroad but also from personal travels abroad are eligible. Remember returning the U.S. after being abroad and wanting to show your photographs to anyone who was willing to look at them? Now is the time to show them off again! We want to see your favorite photographs and share them with the whole University of Maryland community. You have until Sunday, October 28th to submit your photos! Finalists will be displayed in the Stamp Student Union during International Education Week (November 12-16) and auctioned off at a subsequent event.  Check out the guidelines at the link above!
